Savilly : Starry sky observation site
Located in the Arnay-Liernais region, the commune of Savilly is one of the 133 localities within the Morvan Regional Nature Park and borders the Saône-et-Loire department.
Launched in 2021–2022 as part of the Réserve Internationale de Ciel Étoilé (RICE) scheme, this observation site is the result of a collaborative effort with the Morvan Regional Nature Park. It is the very first project of its kind in Burgundy!
Thanks to its exceptional 360° panorama, this location was the ideal choice for such a site. For more than half the night, the Morvan Regional Nature Park is plunged into almost total darkness. This is why it is recognised as one of the region’s finest spots for admiring the wonders of the night sky: the Milky Way, Jupiter, the North Star, the constellations and even shooting stars…
What should you do once you’re there?
The site welcomes you day and night, offering two completely different atmospheres:
• Under the stars: Make yourself comfortable in the deckchairs and on the Morvan wooden benches to gaze at the night sky and listen to the mysterious sounds of the night.
• In broad daylight: Admire the panoramic view, enjoy the fresh air and discover the local wildlife with the help of the educational display board.
Access to the site
Let’s protet the site : The final stretch can only be reached on foot to ensure the peace and quiet of the site and everyone’s safety.
• Parking : The car park is situated at the junction of Rue des Pâtis and the RD115 road (leading to Chissey-en-Morvan). Only vehicles carrying people with reduced mobility (PRM) are permitted to park directly at the observation site.
• Accessibility : For stargazing, equipment may be unloaded on site, but vehicles must then be parked in the designated car park.
Tourism Office’s tips
Remember to bring a light jumper (nights in the Morvan can be chilly) and a torch, preferably one with a red light so as not to dazzle other observers and to preserve your night vision.
