The Motte-Forte tower

This medieval building, round and crenellated, is the last vestige of the Motte-Forte castle. It was ceded to the inhabitants of Arnay in 1361, after the death of the last lord of Arnay (Philippe de Rouvres). In return, the people of Arnay had the obligation to maintain and defend it.

From the 16th century, the castle was dismantled and its stones were used to repair the ramparts, pave the streets, build other buildings …

This tower housed the city archives, the prison notably during the Second World War and then hosted exhibitions until 2015.

Nowadays, it is closed to the pub
